FOBO and Smart AI Strategy

Ever get that low-key panic feeling that everyone else is sprinting… and you’re stuck power-walking?

That feeling has a name: FOBO - Fear of Being Outpaced.

A lot of business owners don’t say it out loud, but they’re thinking it:

• Am I falling behind?

• Should I be doing more with AI?

• Is everyone else already miles ahead?

The pressure is real. And right now, it’s quietly pushing businesses into rushed AI decisions - stacking tools on top of messy workflows, automating confusion, and accidentally accelerating chaos instead of progress.

I felt that pressure too.

So I stopped chasing trends, muted the hype, and stepped back. Instead of asking “What AI tool should I add next?” I asked a better question: “What actually needs to work first?”

That’s when I landed on this simple framework 👇

It’s how I think about AI in my business now - and it’s saved me a lot of wasted time (and money).

1️⃣ Stabilise first - fix the foundation

If a workflow isn’t clear, don’t automate it yet.
Document it. Simplify it. Remove unnecessary steps. Make it repeatable.
AI doesn’t fix broken processes - it just makes them break faster.

2️⃣ Clarify the role - know what AI is actually for

Be specific. What job is AI doing here?
Is it summarising data? Flagging delays? Standardising outputs? Reducing admin? Helping your team move faster or think better?
If you can’t clearly describe its role, it’s probably not ready to be implemented.

3️⃣ Integrate, don’t replace

AI works best as a support system, not a decision-maker.
Let it handle repetitive, low-value tasks so your team can focus on judgment, creativity, and higher-value thinking.
The goal isn’t fewer humans - it’s better use of them.

4️⃣ Measure & adjust

Ask simple questions:
Are tasks faster? Are there fewer errors? Is work more consistent?
If you can’t measure the impact, you can’t improve it - and you definitely can’t scale it.

Here’s the thing: FOBO doesn’t mean you’re behind.

It usually means you’re paying attention.

And sometimes the smartest move isn’t to speed up - it’s to slow down, get intentional, and build something that actually works.
