Have you ever held back from training someone properly because you were scared they might leave?
I think this is one of the biggest unspoken fears for small business owners.
You finally find someone good. Someone who gets it. Someone who takes initiative, solves problems and makes your life easier.
Then you think… do I really want to teach them everything?
Because what happens if I invest all this time, energy, salary increases and training into them… and they leave?
I've been there.
I hired Mari when my Amazon business was growing, and honestly, she was brilliant. She gradually took on more and more of the operational side of the business without needing me to supervise every move.
So naturally, I gave her more responsibility. More trust. Salary increments. Bonuses. Bigger tasks.
I genuinely hoped she would grow with the company.
Then she got poached by a bigger company.
I can't lie - I was gutted.
Because as a small business owner, it can feel personal when someone you have poured into decides to move on.
It is one of the reasons business owners keep too much in their own heads. We worry that if we teach someone everything, we are making ourselves replaceable.
But here's the thing: people may leave anyway.
The real protection isn't holding everything back. It's making sure the knowledge does not walk out of the door with them.
That is where proper SOPs can absolutely save your butt.
When you have captured the process, the decisions, the little lessons, the “this is how we do it here” knowledge… someone new does not have to start from scratch.
They can hit the ground running.
You are not rebuilding the business every time a team member moves on.
Training good people is still worth it. Giving people responsibility is still worth it.
Just do not leave your business dependent on one person’s memory, goodwill or inbox.
Build the systems alongside the team.
